Tyre listens with depth. Older than most cities you know, slower than most cities you’ve lived in, Tyre (Sour) carries sound the way it carries history — close to the body, shaped by repetition, and softened by the Mediterranean.

Here, listening is inseparable from ritual. Calls to prayer move across rooftops and shoreline, bending with the wind, setting a tonal centre for the day. Radios follow suit — Arabic classics, devotional music, spoken word — played at volumes that respect the surrounding life rather than dominate it. Sound blends into the city’s breathing.

Tyre’s listening culture is not venue-led in the modern sense. It lives in homes, workshops, cafés near the sea, and late-evening gatherings where chairs are pulled closer together as the light fades. Music is chosen carefully, often conservatively — not out of lack of curiosity, but out of reverence. Certain voices are trusted. Certain songs are returned to again and again.

The sea plays a constant role. Waves flatten sharp frequencies, wind carries voices, silence arrives naturally. This environmental softness encourages music that sustains rather than excites. Oud, vocal pieces, restrained percussion — sounds that can sit alongside water without competing with it.

What Tyre teaches is subtle but powerful: listening does not need novelty to remain alive. Meaning accumulates through familiarity. A song heard a hundred times gains new weight because life around it has changed.
