Long before Afrobeats became a global export, highlife bands were shaping dancefloors across eastern Nigeria. Clean guitar lines, buoyant bass, brass sections that shimmer rather than shout. The grooves are intricate but never aggressive. They invite rather than demand.

Walk into a live venue in Enugu and you’ll often find a band before you find a DJ. Drums tuned carefully. A guitarist testing a melodic phrase. Vocal harmonies that sit comfortably in the midrange, clear enough for every lyric to land. The system doesn’t overwhelm the room; it supports it. Volume is present, but so is space.

When Afrobeats does arrive — and it does — it sits alongside highlife rather than replacing it. DJs move between eras, respecting lineage while keeping the floor alive.

Church again plays a role, but here the choral richness feels particularly strong. Harmonies stack. Voices blend with precision. The technical setups may vary in scale, yet the musical discipline is undeniable. Listening is active. Participation is expected.
