How Tracks & Tales Stars Are Awarded - Tracks & Tales

The Tracks & Tales Star Guide

Where the world listens, for real.

Some places you remember for the cocktails. Others for the view. But a rare few stay with you because of how they sound — the way the bass sits in your chest, the way the vocals hang in the air, the way the room feels tuned just for you.

Those are the places Tracks & Tales was built to find. Hi-fi cafés tucked into Tokyo side streets. Vinyl-lined bars in Lisbon. Basement sanctuaries in Berlin where the lights drop low and the sound wraps around you.

The Stars are how we mark them — a rating that doesn't care how many followers a venue has. Only how deeply it respects the act of listening.

The Five Criteria.

Every Star comes down to five questions, applied identically from London to Tokyo.

1. Sound system quality. Does the system make you lean in? Chosen with love, tuned with care, looked after like a vintage car — custom stack, audiophile dream, or vintage gem, we want sound that fits the room.

2. Sonic intent. Music can't be background. Every playlist, every selector, every live act has to be about giving the room something to feel.

3. Acoustic environment. The best system fails in the wrong room. How the walls catch the highs. How the bass breathes in the space.

4. Curation. Programming that surprises you, teaches you, pulls you somewhere unexpected — and a room full of people who came to listen.

5. Consistency. Not one perfect night. The standard held, week after week, whoever's on shift.

The Stars.

Respects listening. Music is part of the experience, not wallpaper. A good room in your neighbourhood.

★★ Built for music. System, sound, and curation align with intent. Worth crossing the city for.

★★★ A destination for true listeners. World-class in every way. Worth planning the trip around.

Stars are never permanent. They can be gained, held, or lost as venues evolve — some rise, some fade. That's the point. No venue can pay for one, and no venue ever will.

A curated map, not a crowdsourced list.

Every Star reflects real judgment against these five criteria — by people who live for this. Not averaged opinions, not algorithms: listeners who understand that sound is culture, applying one standard everywhere.

The best rooms in the world are waiting. The question is whether you'll find the next one.
