The Cold Shelf
On the hottest day of the year, I went looking for something cool to play. It turns out that instinct is older and better documented than I thought.

The street gave up around four. Windows open the whole length of the road, every one of them, which is the only time you ever hear what your neighbours actually do — a fan turning, a tap running twice as long as it needs to, somebody's television bleeding out of a first-floor flat and into the trees. Fewer cars than usual. The ones that came past sounded slower than they were, tyres tacky on softened tar. Heat has a sound and most of it belongs to other people's ventilation.
Nothing in the flat wanted to be loud. That's the part I noticed first. Not that I wanted quiet — I wanted something specific, and I stood at the shelf for longer than the decision deserved, because the thing I was looking for wasn't calm.

It was cold.
Those aren't the same and I think most people know it without ever having to say so. Calm is a tempo. Cold is a texture. Calm is what you put on to slow yourself down; cold is what you put on when the air in the room has gone thick and you want something in it that isn't. High frequencies. Space between instruments. Decay you can hear the shape of. A piano note that's allowed to finish. There's a quality certain records have where nothing sounds like it cost anyone any effort, and on a day like today that's not restfulness — it's relief.
So I did what I always do, and then, because it was too hot to do anything else, I wondered why.
It turns out this is one of the most reliable things about human perception, and almost nobody notices they're doing it. Researchers call it cross-modal correspondence: the way people in general, not only synaesthetes, make consistent associations between sensations from different senses, and sound to temperature is one of the sturdiest examples there is. Hand people a set of pieces and a set of scales and they'll agree, more or less, on which ones are cold. Music reliably pulls up shapes, colours, weights and temperatures alongside the emotions — and the blue end of the palette maps to cool with such regularity it barely reads as metaphor any more.
The ear is better at this than we give it credit for. There's a paper with a title I've never forgotten — an Audio Engineering Society study asking why you can hear the difference between hot and cold water being poured. You can. Everyone can. Nobody is taught it. The kettle and the cold tap make different sounds hitting the same cup and some part of you has been quietly logging that since childhood. Before you have any language for it, you know what temperature sounds like.
And then there's the part that surprised me. It isn't only that we hear cold — it's that hearing it does something. A study on thermal comfort found that listening to music you love in an uncomfortably hot or cold environment improves thermal perception, lowers the thermal neutral temperature, and reduces your sensitivity to the environment altogether. The room stays exactly as hot as it was. Your body simply moves the line it's measuring against.
Which means the record isn't a distraction from the heat. It's a negotiation with it.
Jazz got there long before the instruments were pointed at, of course. Cool arrived as a description of a sound and stayed as a description of everything else — the Miles Davis nonet sessions of 1949 and 1950, nine players arranged so the horns breathed rather than declared, gathered up years later by Capitol under a title that sounded like a manifesto and was really just an accurate account of the temperature. Nobody in those sessions is straining. That's the whole trick. Effort is audible, and so is its absence.
Here's the thing I keep turning over, though. Much of the coolest-sounding music ever made came out of the hottest places on earth.
Bossa nova came out of Rio, out of apartments where the windows would have been open exactly like mine, and it sounds like shade. João Gilberto singing barely above the level of the guitar, the guitar barely above the level of the room. Dub was built in Kingston in the early seventies — King Tubby taking finished records apart until what was left was mostly space and the memory of a drum. Nothing about either sounds hurried. Nothing about either sounds like anyone was pushing.
I don't think that's a coincidence and I don't think it's mystical. Heat is an editing principle. It removes anything unnecessary, first from the body and then from the music. You don't oversing at thirty-four degrees. You don't play a fill you don't need. You find the shortest route between where you are and where the song is going, and you take it, and what's left afterwards has an economy that reads to the rest of us — sitting in our own smaller heats, thousands of miles away — as elegance.
The rooms know this too. A surprising number of the listening bars I've spent time in are basements: no windows, low ceilings, dark before you've adjusted, several degrees below the street you just left. That's usually explained as an accident of rent and noise complaints, and mostly it is. But walk down the stairs on a day like today and the room does the same work the record does. Cool, contained, deliberately cut off from the weather. You arrive already halfway to listening.
And the format itself has opinions about heat. Vinyl is a physical object with a temperature it prefers, which is why every record shop in the world has told somebody not to leave that in the car. Sunlight through a window onto a shelf will do it slowly. A dashboard in August will do it in an afternoon. The record warps because it was never designed for this either. There's something I find quite touching in that — that the thing you're reaching for on the hottest day of the year is, in its own way, no better equipped for the day than you are.
By eight the street had started to give the heat back and the room had gone amber at one end. The record finished. I didn't put another one on straight away, which on a normal evening would have felt like an oversight and today felt like the correct amount of sound.
So it isn't just me, then. It's most of us, apparently, doing an old piece of arithmetic without ever writing it down — the body asking for something the air can't provide and the shelf answering.

What actually makes a record sound "cool"?
Mostly space and restraint. Air between the instruments, notes allowed to decay rather than being crowded out, prominent high frequencies, and playing that doesn't sound effortful. Effort is audible in music the same way it's audible in a voice — so is its absence, and that absence is what most of us are hearing as coolness.
Can music really make you feel cooler?
Not literally — the room's temperature doesn't change. But research into thermal comfort has found that listening to music you like in an uncomfortably hot or cold environment improves how you perceive that environment and lowers the point at which your body registers neutral. The measurable effect is on you, not the air.
Why are so many listening bars in basements?
Rent and noise complaints, largely — below-ground rooms are cheaper and easier to soundproof. But the side effects turned out to be the point. No windows means no weather, no daylight and no sense of the hour, which is most of what a room needs to do before anyone can properly listen.
