Perched above Hollywood inside the Thompson Hotel, Bar Lis is a rooftop bar that channels the atmosphere of the French Riviera while overlooking the restless grid of Los Angeles.
By day, the terrace is bathed in Californian light. Palm trees sway beyond the walls and the city stretches outward in every direction. But as evening settles, Bar Lis begins its real transformation. The lights soften, glasses clink across marble counters, and music slowly takes control of the room.
Unlike the hushed discipline of Tokyo’s listening bars, Bar Lis belongs to a more open, Mediterranean tradition of sound. Here the music lives alongside conversation, movement, and the rhythm of the night itself.
DJs regularly guide the atmosphere from the rooftop booth, selecting records that drift between disco, house, balearic grooves and warm late-night soul. The sound system is tuned to energise the terrace rather than overwhelm it, allowing the music to travel naturally through the open air.
That balance is important in Los Angeles. The city has always favoured music under the sky — from beach parties to rooftop dance floors — where sound mingles with warm night air and distant traffic hum. Bar Lis captures that spirit well.
Guests arrive for cocktails, for the skyline, or simply for the promise of a lively evening. Yet before long the music begins to shape the pace of everything. A bassline rolls through the crowd, a disco record drifts across the terrace, and suddenly the rooftop begins to feel less like a hotel bar and more like a small island floating above the city.
In that sense Bar Lis represents another branch of listening culture — one where the experience is social, vibrant and open to the elements. The records may not demand silence, but they are chosen with intention, guiding the mood of the evening from sunset through to the early hours.
And when the right track lands, with the Hollywood lights glittering below and the music rising gently into the night air, the city feels momentarily suspended between rhythm and skyline.
